The hymen is a crescent-shaped piece of skin that partially encloses the vaginal opening, and that may be torn the first time a woman has sex. Women may also tear their hymen as a result of physical activity unrelated to sex, such as placing a tampon, playing sports, or falling and injuring themselves.
